Board Meeting Dates Fiscal Year 2017

  • October 19, 2017

  • March 8, 2018

All meetings will be held from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in Iowa City, Coralville, Cedar Rapids, Quad Cities, or at Camp Liberty.

Board Requirements

  1. Be a registered member of Girl Scouts of the USA.
  2. Financially support Girl Scouting at the leadership level.
  3. Make a concerted effort to attend five board meeting, the annual council meeting, and board training.
  4. Be a positive role model and advocate for Girl Scouts.
  5. Serve on at least one council committee.
  6. Have a clear understanding of the council’s long-range strategic plan.

Prospective Board Candidate Criteria


  • Someone who has access to top-level decision makers in their communities
  • Volunteer fundraising experience in a major non-profit
  • Willingness to open doors to community resources and individuals
  • Willingness to participate by asking and giving to fund raising efforts
  • Advocacy work with government

Strategic Planning

  • Visionary
  • Strategic thinker
  • Business strategy and or change expert


  • Expert in IT planning
  • CPA or CFO experience
  • Senior leader in company
  • Research / Development
  • Property relations
  • Marketing expertise or branding


  • Community partner
  • Supports other non-profit organizations
  • Embraces Girl Scout Promise, Law, and commitment to diversity
  • Advocate for Girl Scouts in a public setting

Skill Set

  • Experience serving on other non-profit boards
  • Willing and able to connect with audience to tell Girl Scout story
  • Understand importance of change management
  • Expert in girls’ and women’s issues

Additional Requirements

  • Create and increase revenue for the council
  • Make a personal gift to the council
  • Listen well to all points of view
  • Agree to conflict of interest statement and board member agreement
  • Express ideas and opinions clearly
  • Be a registered member of GSUSA
  • Prepare before each meeting and attend five board meetings and the annual meeting
