Congratulations to the volunteers leading the way for our Girl Scout Movement. On April 15, 2023, all volunteer-award recipients were recognized for their dedication to making the world a better place. We are thankful for the mentorship and support volunteers have provided Girl Scouts. Find out who achieved awards in 2023 for ensuring Girl Scouts is a place to grow in courage, confidence, and character.

Nancy Engler, SU 855 Walcott

In nearly 50 years as a volunteer with Girl Scouts, Nancy has served as a troop leader, archery facilitator, and cookie cupboard manager. She utilized her sewing skills to support two international service projects while teaching others how to sew. As a result of her efforts, she supplied 100 essential pill bottle bags for Doctors Without Borders and, most recently, over 250 reusable sanitary pads for the organization Girls 4 Girls Ghana. Girls 4 Girls Ghana provides girls access to health education and sanitary pads, increasing school attendance and physical safety.

Stacie Wallingford, SU 805 Cedar Rapids

In Stacie’s nearly 20 years of dedication to the Girl Scout Movement, she has held several volunteer roles directly benefiting Girl Scouts of the Cedar Rapids area. For more than four years, she has been part of the council Product Sales Committee, committed to creating a positive experience for volunteers and Girl Scouts to develop entrepreneurial skills council-wide, and ensuring our council can keep camp and events affordable, and providing essential support services.

Mollie Schmelzer, SU 857 Bettendorf

Mollie has been involved in planning and facilitating Leader Low Down and Courage, Confidence, and Campfires events, creating essential volunteer training opportunities, and serving nearly 300 total volunteers council-wide over the last four years. Her professional career as a psychologist has created unique opportunities for volunteers at Leader Low Down to learn about the mental health needs of youth Girl Scouts. Mollie also presented to 87 teen Girl Scouts at Learn to Lead, sharing ways to better care for their mental health and cope with changes.

Theresa Dunkin, SU 811 Marion

Theresa has committed decades of service to Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois, as a volunteer troop leader, Service Unit Director, and equestrian coordinator, in addition to her role as a board member. In that time, her passion for providing a strong program, and listening to and understanding the needs of our members has strengthened our council and will leave a lasting impact. She has served on the Volunteer Awards and Recognition committee for more than twenty years, approving more than 1,500 Awards for deserving volunteers in that time.
